BELLINGHAM — The downtown YMCA building was evacuated for about an hour Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 23, after reports of smoke in the building.

Dozens of would-be lunchtime exercisers waited outside the building as firefighters combed through the building in the 1200 block of State Street looking for the source.

No fire was apparent. Firefighters had found a tripped breaker for a first-floor racquetball court light fixture that might be the culprit.

Firefighters had blocked off the area for their equipment but some units began clearing the scene about 12:30 p.m. when no major fire was found.
