WWU's Allen named GNAC player of week

Published: January 22, 2013

Western Washington University guard John Allen has been named the Red Lion/Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 13-19.

The weekly honor is Allen's second this season and the fifth of his career.

Allen, a senior, scored 46 points, including a season-high 38 in the Vikings' 91-81 road win at Western Oregon on Thursday. His point total against the Wolves were the most by a GNAC player in nearly two years.

In WWU's two wins, the other 104-56 at Saint Martin's on Saturday, Allen made 17 of 29 field-goal attempts, including 6 of 10 3- pointers. He also had 10 assists, eight rebounds and three steals.

Allen is averaging a team-best 17.6 points per game, which ranks second in the GNAC, as does his free throw percentage of 89.5 (34 of 38). He also leads the squad in assists at 4.1. That ranks fifth in the conference, and his 38 treys are fourth in the league.

Allen was picked as the preseason GNAC Player of the Year and was a Division II Bulletin Super 16 selection. He has scored 1,180 career points, which ranks 16th among WWU leaders, and needs nine more to move into 15th.

WWU, off to a 16-0 start and ranked No. 3 nationally, extended its winning streak over two seasons to 22. That streak is the longest in GNAC history and is one short of the best in school history.
