Mount Baker girls' wrestling wins Foss Tournament

All 11 Mount Baker girls' wrestlers placed in the top four to help the Mountaineers win the Foss Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 19, at Henry Foss High School.

Mount Baker scored 224 points, Burlington-Edison took second with 115 points, Yelm was third with 72, Lakes placed fourth with 63 and Lynden placed fifth. A total of 19 schools competed.

Mountaineers Natalie Smith (119 pounds), Megan Young (130), Jamie Vanderyacht (170), Aysha Schwinden (190) and Akemi Schwinden (235) won their weight classes. Lacy Cannon (145) took second.

"Akemi Schwinden came out and dominated all the girls she wrestled today," Mount Baker coach Clyde Blockley said in a phone interview.

Lynden's 100-pound Nelly Medina placed third, and 190-pounder Alexus Magana and heavyweight Felicity Strain finished fourth in their respective weight classes.

"Nelly Medina started the day with a fever and (acted) like she was going to throw up," Lynden assistant girls' coach Sally Gallegos said in a phone interview. "She ended up wrestling very hard today and did really well."

Mount Baker travels to face Sedro-Woolley in a dual meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, while Lynden travels to compete in the Lady Wolfpack Invite next on Saturday, Jan. 26.
