Sehome overwhelms Burlington-Edison in NWC dual

Published: January 18, 2013

Sehome's Andy Small came within two events of completing high school swimming's iron man and helped lead the Mariners to a 136-36 Northwest Conference victory over Burlington-Edison on Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Arne Hanna Aquatic Center.

Small's time of 57.02 seconds in the 100 butterfly not only won the event but qualified him for next month's Class 2A State Championships, leaving the 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle as the only individual, non-diving events he has yet to qualify in. He narrowly missed making it in the breaststroke on Thursday, as his time of 1:06.83 was only three-tenths of a second off the qualifying standard.

"He's capable of doing it," Sehome coach Don Helling said in a phone interview. "I think he can do it in a non-championship setting. He almost got the 100 breaststroke. That's been one of his tougher events in the past, but he's been looking stronger in it. The 100 freestyle time is pretty tough this year. Not too many guys have made it, but I think he can do it."

Freshman Colin Hakeman won the 200 freestyle (2:02.85) and 500 freestyle (5:28.52), while sophomore Isaiah Grambo won the 50 freestyle (23.94) and 100 freestyle (54.09).

In fact, Sehome won every event but the 100 backstroke and had the top two teams in all three relays.

"We mixed it up pretty good, getting guys in different events, today, and everybody swam well," Helling said.

Sehome (5-0, 4-0 NWC) needs to continue doing that, as it faces crosstown rival Squalicum on Tuesday, Dec. 22, before hosting Anacortes in a meet that will determine the conference title on Thursday, Dec. 24.
