Nooksack Valley girls wrestlers sixth at Burlington tournament

Published: January 15, 2013

The Nooksack Valley girl's wrestling team took only six wrestlers to the Burlington-Edison tournament on Saturday, Jan. 12, and one of them was a 'C' team wrestler and two others had to be pulled out because of match count, but the Pioneers still managed to place sixth at the 24-team event.

Kylee Dekoekkek (155 pounds) and Chloe Gardner (137) each won titles with decisions in their respective championship matches. Dekoekkek beat Stanwood's Ruthy Carlberg, a wrestler she already lost to twice this season, 9-7, while Gardner beat South Kitsap's Amberlee Brafch in her title match.

Alberta Garcia also took fifth at 124 pounds.

Sehome junior Emily Lucke won the title at 118 pounds at the tournament. She scored a pair of early-round pins, before beating Mount Baker's Natalie Smith in a tough semifinal and coming back from five points down to score a pin in the championship match.
