Hilltop Alpine Race Team, 4:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Hilltop Chalet at Hilltop Ski Area, 7014 Abbott Road. A competitive ski team that will be racing in the Youth Ski League against other youth ski teams from the Anchorage area. This program is for ages 7-13, who are intermediate to advanced skiers. Program includes: professional coaching by experienced racers, pre-season dryland training, running gates, video analysis of students skiing, 3-hour pratices twice a week. Avalanche Discussion, 7 p.m., BLM Campbell Creek Science Center, 5600 Science Center Drive. Recreational activity in the backcountry is on the rise. Local and statewide transportation corridors pass through avalanche terrain. Do you know where and how avalanches form? Do you know what causes avalanches to release? How do forecasters determine the relative danger that an avalanche could happen? Mountain Meadow Meander, 11 a.m., Eagle River Nature Center, 32750 Eagle River Road. Join volunteers Bob and Ann Fisher for a 6 mile round trip meander on scenic Nature Center trails. Tying Salmon Flies, 6-9 p.m., Women's Flyfishing, 2220 North Star. Learn how to tie various flies that are successful when fly fishing for salmon. Valley outdoors-women workshop

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game will host a "Becoming an OutdoorsWoman" winter workshop, March 8-10 at Victory Bible Camp near Palmer. The program is designed to help introduce people to hunting, fishing, and other related outdoor activities. Over 48 hands-on sessions are scheduled, including firearm safety, bear safety, shotgun, field dressing of fish and game, ice fishing, spin fishing 101, fly tying, wild edibles, snow machining, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, GPS, smoking fish, fly fishing, and winter survival. The fee is March 1st; check, money order, or credit card accepted. The fee includes meals and lodging as well as instruction, program materials, and use of demonstration equipment. Registration is also open for the "Beyond BOW events: Firearm Cleaning & Maintenance," Jan. 23; "Fur Sewing," Feb. 4-6; "Women's Hunter Education Class," Feb.10 and Overnight Backcountry Ski Trip to Juneau Lake cabin, Feb. 23-24 Details can be found www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=outdooreducation.bowschedule.
