Sad ending for rescued ewe: ‘Tamarack’ the sheep dies

Published: January 14, 2013

The end came less than a week after a ewe trapped in deep snow was rescued by the ski patrol at Tamarack Resort. The animal, nicknamed “Tamarack,” died in its sleep Friday night, said Tim Flaherty, the resort’s executive director. He was told it was due to renal failure.

Lost in the woods: Rescuers believe the sheep was among thousands being herded back to Emmett in late October. The animal likely strayed and got left behind. At some point, it was buried by a snowstorm — its head was the only thing visible when a family came upon it Jan. 6.

50-50 chance: The ewe was taken to the Lee O’Dell farm near Cascade where she got fluids via an IV. She seemed to be making progress at first. “They did the best they could,” Flaherty said.
