WCC women jump out early in 70-59 win

The Whatcom Community College womens' basketball team jumped out to a 23-4 lead in its 70-59 win over Skagit Valley College at home in an NWAACC game Wednesday, Jan. 9.

"Skagit is a big rival for us and our girls were prepared and ready to play," Whatcom coach Sara Bergner said in a phone interview. "We got up early and that gave us a nice cushion. I thought we had a balanced attack scoring wise and defensively we did a good job holding them to 59 and I was happy about that."

Erika Locker led the Orcas (9-5, 2-0 NWAACC) with 21 points, eight assists and eight rebounds. Bree Park scored 20 points and Cambie Edwards scored 16 for Whatcom.

"Locker was pretty much perfect shooting tonight," Bergner said. "The only shot she missed was a free throw and was very productive in her 40 minutes."

Former Nooksack Valley player Allison Johnson scored two points for Skagit Valley College.

Whatcom plays at Edmonds at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12.
