Ski clinic set Saturday, Jan. 12, at Bogus Basin

The clinic Saturday at the Frontier Point Lodge will be taught by coaches and athletes from the Bogus Basin Nordic Team. All skill levels are welcome. Proceeds from the event benefit Bogus Basin Nordic Team, a nonprofit organization. People attending will not only learn about Nordic skiing from local experts, they will be helping the next generation of skiers.

Here’s a schedule:

• Two sessions will be offered 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 3 p.m.

• Choose either skate or classic-stride instruction.

• Registration fee is $42 for one session, or $63 for both sessions. Note: Registration fee does not include trail pass or equipment rentals.

• All skill levels are welcome.

Program Saturday, Jan. 12, offers tips on birds

Learn about wintertime backyard birds at a free program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Jim Hall Foothills Learning Center, 3188 Sunset Peak Road.

Winter is a great time for bird-watching in the Treasure Valley, and experts will offer tips on what birds winter in Boise, where to put bird feeders and what seeds are best. Kids and adults will have a chance to make a bird feeder and do some bird crafts. The class is open to all ages, and no registration is required.

Avalanche awareness clinic set for Wednesday, Jan. 16

The free clinic, presented by Sawtooth Mountain Guides, is 7 p.m. at the REI store in Boise at 8300 W. Emerald St. The session will explain where and why avalanches occur and provides a basic approach to managing risk in the backcountry.

Participants will learn to access local avalanche bulletins and weather reports, recognize basics signs of avalanche danger and learn simple ways to help avoid avalanche danger. To register, go to rei.com/stores/boise.
