Led by Jack Hallmark, Treven Elgersma and Tomas Alvarado, the Meridian wrestling team placed eighth out of 18 teams at the Cardinal Classic wrestling tournament Saturday, Jan. 5, at Franklin Pierce High School.
Hallmark (132 pounds) earned a second-place finish, losing 6-3 in the tournament final, Elgersma (160) took fourth and Alvarado (126) placed sixth.
"We scored 70 or 80 points, and Jack was like a third of our points," Meridian coach Fred Pulphus said in a phone interview. "Jack is our anchor, and all of his hard work is paying off. Tomas wrestled some quality opponents, and Elgersma took fourth and has never wrestled before."
The Trojans wrestle Lynden next in a dual meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, in Lynden before the Northwest Conference Tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Sehome High School.
