Stephanie Somers was three assists short of a triple-double as the Lynden girls' basketball team returned from its winter basketball tournament in San Diego, Calif., to earn a 51-35 Northwest Conference win against Anacortes Friday, Jan. 4, at Lynden High School.
"We had a heart-wrenching loss to Burlington-Edison right before break, and we couldn't have planned (the tournament) any better," Lynden coach Rob Adams said in a phone interview. "We got to get out and hang together while we were down there and played some real good competition. We came out really focused and were playing for each other."
Adams said the Lions' tournament play carried over to their win against Anacortes. Somers scored a team-high 13 points, hauled in 10 rebounds, handed out seven assists and played only 24 minutes, 50 seconds. Teammate Kelsey Bouwman scored 12 points, and Miriah Brown added eight.
Lynden led 8-5 after the first quarter, but the Lions scored 18 points - 11 by Somers - in the second quarter to build a 26-13 halftime lead.
Lynden (8-4, 3-1) travels to Nooksack Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 8, in a Northwest Conference game.
