Published: January 3, 2013

The upstart Nooksack Valley girls' wrestling team took Burlington-Edison to the last match of the night, but Delisha Hodges scored a win by decision to lift the Tigers to a 31-30 victory on Wednesday, Jan. 2.

"It was a really good match," Nooksack Valley coach Michelle DeKoekkoek said in a phone interview. "The girls have put in a lot of hard work in the wrestling room, and it shows."

The Pioneers got pins from Albert Garcia at 124 pounds, Toni York at 130 pounds, Chloe Gardner at 137 pounds and Kylee DeKoekkoek at 155 pounds and forfeit win from Yasmin Cabrera at 170 pounds to push the Tigers to the brink.

"I thought Toni York was really aggressive," Michelle DeKoekkoek said. "She's been kind of quiet, but she was really aggressive tonight. Candice Rodriguez (at 145 pounds) wrestled a state qualifier from last year, and I thought she was wrestled her really tough."

Nooksack Valley will travel to Sedro-Woolley for a double-dual with Stanwood on Friday, Jan. 4, before competing in the Woolley Women's Tournament a day later.
