BELLINGHAM - A special negotiation team was called in to get a barricaded man out of a room at the Shamrock Motel early Monday, Dec. 31, after he allegedly smashed a car's windshield with a piece of rebar.
After the man damaged another person's car at the motel, 4133 W. Maplewood Ave., he went into a motel room and refused to come out, threatening to harm deputies if they entered, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office.
The office's Special Response Team, which is like a SWAT team with special training in negotiations, was called in. Members were able to enter the room and arrest Juan Rodriguez Gonzales, 48, on suspicion of malicious mischief in the second degree and resisting arrest, according to the Sheriff's Office. He also was booked into jail for failing to make a court appearance on an earlier criminal trespassing charge.
