515,700: That was the record number of sockeye salmon that were counted this year at Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River. The 515,700 run count far exceeded the preseason forecast of 462,000 fish, based on preliminary numbers released Dec. 14 by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Not surprisingly, a record 3,400 sockeye were caught by sport anglers during the summer season in river reaches below the dam.
A total of 180,500 sockeye are predicted to return to the Columbia River basin in 2013.
