The Ferndale boys' basketball team focused on shutting down Arlington's leading scorer and challenge the rest of the seventh-ranked team in Class 4A to beat it, and that's exactly what the Eagles did, topping the Golden Eagles 58-46 on the last day of the Mountlake Terrace Tournament.
"I was proud of how hard our guys played and how they left everything on the floor," Ferndale coach Monte Walton said in a phone interview. "I was really pleased with the guys we had guarding their top player, (Terry) Dawson, who came in averaging 21 points. Lukas Melton and Brady Shearer held him to 11 tonight."
But the rest of unbeaten Arlington's lineup touched Ferndale for nine 3-pointers, led by Kaleb Bryson, who hit five and scored a game-high 17 points.
Ferndale (5-6) was led by Kendall Kelly's 12 points and 10 from Austin Honeycutt.
"We took our chances," Walton said. "We knew the Bryson kid could shoot, and we lost track of him a couple of times. But this was a good game to get us ready to get back into conference play."
Ferndale will do that on Friday, Jan. 4, when it travels to Sehome.
