Lynden boys' basketball coach Brian Roper plans to enjoy every ride at Disneyland on Sunday, Dec. 30, just a little bit more, and his team should do the same, after it beat Granite Bay of California 66-58 on Saturday, Dec. 29, in the championship game of the Surf Division of the Surf 'n Slam Tournament in San Diego.
Matt Meyer led the way scoring half his 16 points from the foul line, including going 6 for 6 from the stripe in the fourth quarter after Granite Bay battled back to tie the game at 50.
"They fouled the wrong dude," Roper said in a phone interview.
Meyer, who added 11 rebounds for a double-double, was joined in double figures by John Shine's 15 points, 12 points each from Zach Vis and Jaremy Martin and 10 from Dak Shagren.
"This was a quality opponent and a terrific high school basketball game," Roper said. "It was two competitive teams."
Granite Bay beat Long Beach Poly earlier this month to claim the Division I state football championship, meaning Lynden, which won the 2A state football title earlier this month, has victories over the Washington Class 4A state football champion, Skyline, and the California Division I football champion on consecutive days.
The Lions (9-1) return to Northwest Conference action on Friday, Jan. 4, when they travel to Anacortes.
