Takemura's win highlights strong day by Bellingham at North Mason Classic

Published: December 30, 2012

Riley Takemura took first place at 113 pounds to lead six Bellingham wrestlers to place Saturday, Dec. 29, at the North Mason Classic.

Takemura beat Kalam's Kurtis Lindsey 11-6 in the championship match to claim the title.

"It was his second tournament in the last two weeks, and he's won them both," Bellingham coach Tom Hinz said in a phone interview. "He beat a pretty rough guy in the finals, but he wrestled really well. He really should have pinned the guy."

Also placing for the Red Raiders on Saturday were Patrick Anderson at 145 pounds and Blair Bennett at 152, who each took third, and Dewald Oliver at 106, Babak Abedsaidi at 138 and Dylan Hanson at heavyweight, who all placed fifth.

Anderson beat Aberdeen's Erikk Machowek by pin in 39 seconds in the third-place match, while Bennett needed only 59 seconds to pin Henry Foss' Jonathan Cabrera in his third-place match.

"We're pretty happy," Hinz said. "We only brought nine guys, and to have six of them place, that's a pretty good tournament."

Bellingham will host Meridian and Ferndale in a Northwest Conference dual on Wednesday, Jan. 2.
