The Blaine boys' wrestling team took second and Mount Baker third out of 12 teams competing in the Vashon Invite on Friday, Dec. 28.
Blaine scored 206 points and Mount Baker 194. The invite winner, Quincy, scored 210.
"It went a lot better than I thought it would be," Mount Baker coach Ron Lepper said in a phone interview. "We wrestled really solid and Hunter Schenk had a really good tournament. He won all of his matches by 10 and was behind in his final match and pinned the opponent."
Schenk (126 pounds) won his weight class for the Mountaineers. Mount Baker also had a first place finish from Sterling Honeycutt (220). Alex Tyska (152) and Jake Larsen (285) finished second, and Tyrel Cronk (195) and Zach Larson (145) finished third.
Blaine had three first place finishes from Anthony Frey (132), Justin Belding (152), and Mike Antczak (285).
"I think this was Anthony's first varsity tournament championship and he looked really good," Blaine coach Craig Foster said in a phone interview. "He pinned all of his opponents. Not bad for a freshman at a competitive varisty tournament."
Caleb Johnson (220) finished second and John Stewart (182) and Christian Sharp (145) finished third for the Borderites
Mount Baker will wrestle at Lynden on Wednesday, Jan. 2, in a Northwest Conference meet, while Blaine will participate in the Panther Classic in Snohomish on Saturday, Jan. 5.
