The Western Washington University women's basketball squad has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Team of the Week for Dec. 16-22.
The Vikings, 8-2 overall and 2-0 in league play, posted wins over two nationally ranked opponents, coming back to edge sixth-ranked Washburn KS, 64-62, and nipping No. 15 Grand Canyon, 72-68 in overtime, at the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic held at Las Vegas, Nevada, on Dec. 18-19.
Center Britt Harris, who earned tournament Most Valuable Player honors, scored a career-high 27 points in the upset of Washburn. The loss was the first in seven games this season for the Lady Blues.
WWU trailed by six points, 46-40, with less than nine minutes left, but went on a 16-4 run over a span of 3:25 for a 56-50 lead with 6:12 to play. The Vikings led the rest of the way.
Harris, who had 15 points in the second half, was 10-of-19 from the field and 7 of 9 on free throws. She also had four assists and three steals, both team highs.
Point guard Corinn Waltrip, who was named to the all-tournament team, matched a career-high with 23 points, nine of them in overtime, as WWU beat Grand Canyon, snapping a nine-game Antelope winning streak.
