Tackel and Tactics: The Lowly Egg

Published: December 18, 2012

Hook: Sizes 12 and up, curved shank.

Body: Take your pick. Anything red, peach, orange or fluorescent.

Eye: Dumbbell or skip it.

Tip: The lowly, unloved egg. Scorned by many fly anglers because it’s not pretty and it looks too much like bait. It’s also too easy to tie, unlike a stonefly nymph that also imitates bait. But egg patterns should be a part of any fly box because an egg is always a tempting morsel for a fish. If you want to take all the guess work out of fly fishing steelhead, drift one of these under an indicator with a long leader.
