Whatcom Community College women's basketball player Bree Park helped the Orcas force two overtimes, but WCC ran out of gas and lost 70-66 to Big Bend Community College during the WCC Crossover Tournament title game Sunday, Dec. 16, in Bellingham.
Park made two late free throws to force the first overtime period and drilled 3-pointer to send the game to double overtime. Her late game heroics came one night after she scored on an offensive rebound-put back in the final minutes to send the Orcas to Sunday's title game. She finished with a game-high 28 points. Erika Locker scored 20 points in the loss.
"Both of those girls made the all-tournament team," Whatcom coach Sara Bergner said in a phone interview. "They just played tough for us this weekend, and they logged a lot of minutes. Erika got to the line and was 8 for 11. She was attacking well. Bree hit some big shots for us. I just think we ran out of gas at the end."
Whatcom's Amanda Tapia recorded a team-high 10 assists, and Nathalie Gruber hauled in a team-best 10 rebounds.
"Obviously, it would have been nice to win the home crossover tournament," Bergner said. "That was our goal, but I was impressed with how we came back from 10 points down in the last two games."
