What: If you are in the area, take in the brief Long Beach firework show to ring in the new year.
Where: The fireworks are launched from the beach in front of the city’s boardwalk. Go to the main beach approach at Bolstad Avenue to find parking and access to the boardwalk.
History: This popular local tradition began about 15 years ago. A previous mayor, and an admitted pyrotechnic fan, loved shooting off fireworks, said David Glasson, finance director for City of Long Beach.
It’s quick: Glasson admits the show is not long, lasting no more than five minutes to shoot off the $1,000 worth of fireworks. “But you get a nice crisp winter night, and the fireworks are just so bright. It’s better than any Fourth of July,” he said.
Do it yourself: Shooting off fireworks is legal that night, so people can come down to the beach and shoot off their own pyrotechnic display, Glasson said.
Cost: Free.
