Charlie Linneman went 10 for 10 from the free throw line, including hitting eight in the fourth quarter to help the Sehome boys' basketball team hold off a determined Sedro-Woolley squad 85-81, Friday, Dec. 14, in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams.
"It was a wild, wild game," Sehome coach A.J. LaBree said in a phone interview. "It was competitive throughout. We had a 10-point lead at halftime, and we usually talk about whether we're going to push it our or let it become a battle from there."
Sedro-Woolley's Tristan Jette certainly made his vote known, as he hit four of his game-high six 3-pointers in the third to help the Cubs cut the lead in half by the end of the period.
"In the fourth, we had a seven-point lead with under a minute to go, and then Charlie made a couple of free throws, but then (Jackson) Price hit back-to-back 3s. Woolley kept fighting and scoring. They never said die. It was really impressive."
Linneman finished with 23 points, while Gabe Sanchez scored a game-high 28 for Sehome (4-1, 1-0 NWC).
"Sanchez was really consistent all four quarters," LaBree said. "He did a good job of scoring in the lane and making free throws. His mid-range game was on."
The Mariners travel to Mount Baker for a non-conference game, Saturday, Dec. 15.
