Rough third quarter contributes to Squalicum girls' basketball loss

Published: December 9, 2012

The Storm girls' basketball team suffered a third-quarter lapse and fell 50-43 to Oak Harbor in a non-conference game Saturday, Dec. 8, in Oak Harbor.

Squalicum led 24-16 at half, but the Wildcats outscored the Storm 17-1 in the third period. Lauren Eckert scored a team-high 12 points, Meghan Lowry added 11 and Kayla Chang scored five. Janna Poradun and Sydney Arndorfer hauled in a team-best six boards.

"We've been having problems with a lost ship scenario in the third quarter," Squalicum coach Mark Wright said in a phone interview. "We've just been having a hard time after halftime, and I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing."

Squalicum rebounded to outscore Oak Harbor 18-17 in the final quarter, but the damage had been done.

"Meghan played so hard, and it's really exciting for her," Wright said. "She is such an explosive, physical player. It's still new for her being the girl for us. Lauren got hot, and Sydney played really well defensively."
