SEDRO-WOOLLEY
CUBS
Coach: Brett Farrar (first season)
Last year: Finished eighth in the Northwest Conference with a 6-7 conference mark. Did not advance to the postseason with a 9-11 record overall.
Players to watch: Tristan Jette (sr. G), Jackson Price (so. G), Jon Conijn (sr. F), Gabe Farmer (sr. F), Michael Moser (jr. G), Mason Elms (so. G), Henry Janicki (sr. F), Troy Peterson (sr. F), Nick Doorn (sr. G)
Outlook: Farrar, who lists his hometown as Bellingham, inherits a squad with little varsity experience. Price averaged 7.1 points per game last year and Jette averaged 6.2, but that was about it in terms of returning starters. But that doesn't mean the Cubs will be a pushover this year. "They are young, but they are hungry," Farrar told the Skagit Valley Herald. "They are eager to get out on the court. There are a lot of guys with the word senior next to their names, but they have very little varsity experience." The Cubs are expected to rely on defense to keep games close, and so far that seems to be working for them. "We have to develop a defensive culture," Farrar said. "We have to focus on the defensive end. I am more interested in defensive stops than I am in who takes the shots. For us to have a chance of winning, we are going to have to play defense." The drop down to 2A should not hurt the Cubs, either, as they will likely be in the middle of what figures to be a mad scramble for the final postseason spots.
