Tired of clowning around in Congress

Published: December 9, 2012

Something is seriously wrong with our system of government when the Speaker of the House from Ohio's 8th congressional district with a population of 630,730 believes he can thumb his nose at the 63,714,092 citizens who voted Obama into office. Who is this whiteface clown? For those who don't understand my comparison of Congressman Boehner to a "whiteface clown," the whiteface - usually associated with a circus - is typically the top clown or ringleader who orders the other clowns around, and whose clownishness is revealed by either by his own ineptness or by that of his underlings. The whiteface is also the oldest style of clown, dating back to Greek theater and the court jester of the Middle Ages. However, in recent times a major subtype has emerged. Unlike the court jester or classic whiteface that was considered quite intelligent, the "political whiteface" is more buffoonish and outlandish with an exaggerated style. Traditionally, the whiteface also wore a one-piece outfit decorated quite outlandishly. Today, that is no longer the case and the political whiteface can wear virtually anything that fits his or her character or position - such as a suit and tie topped off with an American flag lapel pin. Anyway, you get the drift.
