Sedro-Woolley Cubs girls' basketball preview CAPS

SEDRO-WOOLLEY

CUBS

Coach: Art Guel (second season)

Last year: Finished third in the Class 3A NWC standings with a 0-13 conference record. ... Did not qualify for postseason and finished 0-20 overall.

Players to watch: Emily Cann (Sr., G); Tianna Langdon (Jr. G/W); Bridgette Janicki (Jr., P/W); Emily Van Liew (So., P/W)

Outlook: Despite suffering a tough winless season a year ago, Sedro-Woolley coach Art Guel is optimistic about the prospect of enjoying a comeback year during the 2012-13 season. One area working in the Cubs' favor is team height. Senior posts Coral Weist and Lacey Pulver are 6-foot-1, and Bridgette Janicki, who averaged nearly 14 rebounds a game last season before sustaining an ankle injury, is back in full form. "They are ready to win now," Guel told the Skagit Valley Herald. "The girls have a whole different attitude." They'll need it in what seems to be another year stocked with talented Northwest Conference teams. Guard Emily Cann led Sedro-Woolley in scoring last season with her 5.9 points per game average and returns for her senior year. Junior Tianna Langdon and sophomore Emily Van Liew are two capable scorers in the backcourt that could alleviate pressure off of Cann. Sedro-Woolley is not short on experience. Nine of the Cubs' 12 varsity players are upperclassmen and four are seniors.
