MOUNT BAKER

MOUNTAINEERS

Coach: Brenda Ellis (eighth season)

Last year: Finished tied for fourth in the Class 2A NWC standings with a 9-4 conference record. ... Ended season after going 1-2 during the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament and finished 16-7 overall. ... Kristen Frey and Connor Hart were All-Whatcom County selections.

Players to watch: Emily Yost (So., P); Emma Lallas (Jr., F); Korrinna Camacho (Jr., G); Emily Brandland (Fr., P)

Outlook: Mount Baker's juniors have been patiently waiting two years for their turn to crack the Mountaineers' varsity lineup. After the graduation of all five Baker starters from the 2011-12 season, players like Korrinna Camacho, Jessa Baisden, Emma Lallas, Taylor Leger and Rayedeen Engels get their opportunity to prove themselves. "We really only have one player with varsity experience, but we have a lot of juniors who have played together for several years," coach Brenda Ellis said in a phone interview. "They knew coming in it would be two years before they got to play varsity, so they've been preparing for this." Not only did the Mountaineers graduate five seniors, there's not one senior on Baker's 2012-13 roster. Still, Mount Baker has quite a bit of talent. Yost averaged 5.7 points per game last year, and 5-foot-10 freshman post Emily Brandland is an up-and-comer with a lot of upside. Ellis has been slowly bringing Camacho along under past players Kristen Frey and Connor Hart. Ellis believes her junior guard is ready to lead Baker's offense. A fast-paced, up-and-down the floor style of play has been the Mountaineers' staple. Ellis said it will be no different this season.
