Burlington-Edison girls' basketball preview CAPS

BURLINGTON-EDISON

TIGERS

Coach: Bruce Shearer (second season)

Last year: Finished first in the Class 2A NWC standings and won a NWC title with a 12-1 conference record. ... Ended season after going 3-1 during the Class 2A State Tournament and finished 24-3 overall. ... Placed fourth at state.

Players to watch: Mariah Swanson (Sr., W); Kim Rabenstein (Sr., W); Molly McTaggart (Sr., W); Sydney Brown (Sr., G); Ellary Torset (Sr., P); Emily Agen (So., P)

Outlook: Ryleigh Swagerty and Katlyn Mataya were the Tigers' second and third leading scorers, respectively, last year and will be severely missed, but Burlington-Edison returns the bulk of its lineup that placed fourth at the Class 2A State Tournament, won the Northwest Conference title and won a 2A Northwest District title last year. Leading scorer and wing Mariah Swanson returns alongside seniors Kim Rabenstein, Molly McTaggart, Sydney Brown and Ellary Torset. Swanson, Rabenstein, McTaggart and Brown give coach Bruce Shearer plenty of options in the backcourt, while Torset is one of the top posts in the NWC. Joining Torset in the post may be 5-foot-11 sophomore Emily Agen, who saw limited varsity minutes as a freshman, but has received praise by Shearer as an up-and-comer. "We want to meet or exceed what we did last year," Shearer told the Skagit Valley Herald. The Tigers certainly appear to have the pieces to contend for a state title once again.
