Emily Brandland and Emily Yost didn't start for Mount Baker last season, but they're certainly making the most of their new roles.
Yost logged varsity minutes as the first or second player off the bench and Brandland was playing middle school ball this time last year. The frontcourt duo scored 17 points apiece to lead Mount Baker to a dominating 76-31 win against Sedro-Woolley in a non-conference game Thursday, Dec. 6, in Deming.
Yost hauled in a game-high 17 boards, including eight on the offensive end, for a double-double.
"I think we definitely did a lot better," Mount Baker coach Brenda Ellis said in a phone interview. "We've been trying to play fast without turning the ball over, and we got some nice, easy buckets in transition tonight. We've been working on getting points in the paint, and we took 30 shots in the paint. That was something positive for us."
Guard Korrinna Camacho scored 10 points and handed out two assists, and Jessa Baisden scored six points.
Mount Baker (2-1) led 39-21 at the half and limited the Cubs to 10 second-half points. Baker out rebounded Sedro-Woolley 41-28. The Cubs shot just 22 percent from the field.
"Yost created a lot of opportunities for herself with offensive rebounds," Ellis said. "Even last year as a freshman, she got a lot of offensive boards."
Sedro-Woolley's Bridgette Janicki scored a team-high nine points, and Tianna Langdon added eight in the loss.
Mount Baker hosts Meridian in a non-conference game at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8.
