Ferndale sophomore post Linsey Honeycutt picked up two quick fouls and had to sit out most of the first half, but she came back strong in the second, scoring 14 of her game-high 16 points after halftime to lead the Golden Eagles to a 56-49 non-conference victory over visiting Lynden Christian on Tuesday, Dec. 4.
"We had to go to the Clydesdale when it came time to win the game," Ferndale coach Mike Ivy said of Honeycutt, who scored eight points in the fourth quarter.
Neither team handled the press particularly well, as the Lyncs turned the ball over 24 times and the Golden Eagles had 30 turnovers.
"I thought their point guard (Makayla Lancaster) was real tough with her defensive pressure, and she hit a couple of 3s," Ivy said. "I thought our point guard (Taylor Reid) played defense really good, too, and she had six assists."
Honeycutt also grabbed six rebounds, as did Hannah Carlson, who scored nine points for Ferndale (2-0).
Karley De Jager scored 12 points for the Lyncs (2-1), while Kayla Tiemersma and Kara Bajema each had 11. Courtney Hollander had six rebounds, while she and Lancaster each had four assists.
LC will play at Burlington-Edison in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Dec. 11, while Ferndale will host Blaine on Friday, Dec. 7, in a non-conference game.
