Over the past three years, nobody has done it quite like Lynden quarterback Josh Kraght.
As a three-year starter for the Lions, Kraght passed for 6,408 yards and 77 touchdowns and rushed for 2,380 yards and 47 scores. The senior capped off his career by passing for a career-high 376 yards - only 14 shy of the Class 2A state championship game record - and four TDs and rushed for another score in directing Lynden to a repeat state title with a 41-7 victory over Tumwater on Saturday, Dec. 1.
"Josh is an incredibly special athlete and very special person," Lynden coach Curt Kramme said after Saturday's game. "He has meant so much to this program on the field over the past three years, but, as I've said before, the thing I'm going to remember about him is what a great kid he is off it."
As if to prove Kramme's point just a little more, Kraght was selected the All-Northwest Conference 2A/3A Most Valuable Player by the league's coaches for the third straight year.
Kramme was selected the Coach of the Year, while Squalicum's Ted Flint was selected Assistant Coach of the Year.
Kraght, who also was selected to the first-team as a quarterback and defensive back, was one of one of five two-way first-team selections.
Lynden teammates Matt Meyer (offensive/defensive lines) and Zach Vis (receiver, defensive back) also earned that distinction, along with Ferndale running back/defensive back Alex Conley and offensive/defensive lineman Kameron Mckay.
In all, the Lions gathered 11 first-team selections.
The first-team offensive line included Mckay, Meyer, Lynden's Bret DeGraaff, Burlington-Edison's Jeremy Canniff and Sedro-Woolley's Brandon Pless, while Burlington-Edison's Austin Von Herbulis was selected the tight end. Mckay, Meyer, DeGraaff and Von Herbulis were unanimous selections.
Kraght (2,740 yards, 32 TDs passing; 894 yards, 16 TDs rushing) was joined in the offensive backfield by running backs Conley (1,331 yards, 26 TDs) and Lynden's Luke Christianson (1,502 yards, 22 TDs rushing). All three were unanimous selections.
Vis (929 yards, 10 TDs receiving), Lynden teammate Dak Shagren (445 yards, six TDs) and Bellingham's Darice Haywood (501 yards, seven TDs) were the first-team receivers. Shagren was a unanimous selection.
The first-team defensive line was made up by Meyer and Mckay, Lynden's Gabe Kaemingk and Bellingham's Thomas Vazorka.
Earning first-team linebacker honors were Ferndale's Cameron Ivy, Lynden's Caleb Newman, Squalicum's Sam Olney and Burlington-Edison's Jeff Bajema. Ivy was a unanimous selection.
Conley, Kraght and Vis were joined in the first-team defensive backfield by Burlington-Edison's Darren Arndt.
Burlington junior Tanner Gates was a unanimous first-team selection at kicker and the only non-senior on the first team, while Anacortes' AJ Yost was the first-team punter.
Kraght, Newman, Meyer, Vis, Olney, Squalicum teammate Brandon LeDoux, Sehome's Titi Lamositele, Bo Banner and Austin Rapp, along with Bajema and Canniff were all nominated for the Class 2A All-State game, while Conley was nominated for the 3A All-State game.
Whatcom County players selected to the second-team All-NWC offense were Ivy (line), Newman (line), Lynden's Casey Halbert (line), Squalicum's Lane Covington (line), Lamositele (running back) and Rapp (quarterback).
The second-team defense included Halbert (line), Banner (line), LeDoux (line), Lynden's Jaremy Martin (linebacker), Lynden's Jose Martinez (linebacker), Lamositele (linebacker), Ferndale's Cooper Clark (secondary), Christianson (secondary), Sehome's Mo Williams (secondary) and Rapp (secondary).
Squalicum's Quinn Carpenter and Blaze Yetter were selected the second-team kicker and punter, respectively.
