Says exports don't aid energy independence

Daily we hear the energy industry's claims that if we just mine and drill more we will have energy independence. If that is so, why are even talking about such things as the Gateway Pacific Terminal and the Keystone XL pipeline? Their sole purpose for existence is to facilitate the export of coal and oil to foreign markets. How can we expect to have energy independence while simultaneously exporting these finite resources? Aren't the two mutually exclusive? Is it possible we are being conned by the energy industry?
