The Blaine girls' basketball team defeated Mount Baker 45-34 at home on Monday, Dec. 3, in a non-conference game.

The Borderites jumped out to an early 18-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and were able to sustain the lead.

"It was a team effort on defense," Blaine coach Ryan Pike said in a phone interview. "We got on the ground and got after it. Every single loose ball we were on the ground and I was proud of everyone for that."

Blaine was led by Taylor V'Dovec who scored 17 points and had 13 rebounds and Mandy Hayes who scored 12.

"V'Dovec played really well again, inside and out," Pike said. "She handled the ball in the press in the middle and played well. Alexis McElwain played really hard in the inside for us too."

Mount Baker was led by Emily Brandland who scored 11 points and Korrinna Comacho who scored 10.

"Both teams played hard," Pike said. "Mount Baker came out and pressured us. We came out and turned over the ball a lot. We had decent looks, we just couldn't finish them."

Mount Baker (1-1) will host Sedro-Woolley on Thursday, Dec. 6, while Blaine (3-0) travels to Ferndale on Friday, Dec. 7.
