Huge defensive effort leads Blaine past Sedro-Woolley

Published: December 1, 2012

Blaine's defense only gave up three field goals to Sedro-Woolley, as the Borderites cruised to a 51-11 non-conference win Friday, Nov. 30, at Blaine High School.

Led by Olivia Olason's and Breanna Chau's strong defensive effort, the Borderites (2-0) forced 26 turnovers and took a 26-0 lead after the first quarter.

"We came out and trapped them and got a lot of steals in that first quarter," Blaine coach Ryan Pike said in a phone interview. "I told the girls, 'If you hold a team to three field goals in 32 minutes, that shows how well we played.' It was the best defensive effort I've seen."

Blaine's Alexis McElwain scored a game-high 13 points and hauled in a team-high six boards. Taylor V'Dovec and Breanna Chau scored 10 points, and Mandy Hayes and Olason had eight.

The Borderites host Mount Baker in a non-conference game at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3.
