Meridian girls' basketball falls in season opener 35-31 to South Whidbey

Published: November 30, 2012

The Meridian girls' basketball team lost its season opener 35-31 at home against South Whidbey on Thursday, Nov. 29.

"For the first game of the season we played really hard," Meridian coach Don McMains said in a phone interview. "We had a real dry spell in the second and didn't do a good job putting the ball in the hole. The girls played really hard and had a shot at the end of the game to tie it but it just didn't go in."

Taylor Lunde led the Trojans with seven points. Abbi Rautenberg had three.

"Abbi did a great job tonight running point," McMains said. "Even as the point guard she had 10 rebounds tonight and for a point guard, that's really impressive. It's a new position for her this year and she did a great job portraying the team attitude."

Meridian (0-1) hosts Coupeville on Saturday, Dec. 1.
