Squalicum wrestling opens with a tiebreaker loss

The Squalicum wrestling team lost its season-opening match on a tiebreaker Thursday, Nov. 29, at Stanwood.

The Storm was losing early on in the match but got big wins in the heavier weights to tie the match 39-39 on Patrick Schjelderup's pin at 285 pounds to end the match.

Stanwood won on the fourth tiebreaker - total wins - by one victory.

"We thought we were down and out and were able to come from behind," Storm coach Russell Robinson said in a phone interview. "For the first match, I was quite proud of them."

The Storm had pins from Zack Alter at 145, Aaron Saunders at 170, Kyle Stallo at 195 and Schjelderup. Anthony Krause won by forfeit at 106, and Jobe Ashby won by decision at 132.

Squalicum will wrestle at the George Yonlick Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 1, at Bellingham.
