The Nooksack Valley girls' wrestling team's four returners led the way to a 40-36 season-opening victory over Lynden on Thursday, Nov. 29.
Kylee Dekoekkoek at 155 pounds and Alberta Garcia at 124 both scored victories by pin, while Alex Parson at 118 and Chloe Gardner at 140 each recorded technical fouls.
"Those four wrestled really well," coach Chad Parson said in a phone interview. "The other girls played a little cat and mouse and focused on technique."
Newcomer Abby Dekoekkoek won by pin, while Toni York also showed promise against an experienced wrestler.
Complete results were not available.
The Pioneers will host Concrete and Darrington in double dual on Dec. 5, while Lynden will be at Bellingham that same night.
