BOYS' SWIMMING PREVIEW: Ferndale Golden Eagles

Published: November 30, 2012

FERNDALE

GOLDEN EAGLES

Coach: Jeff Anderson

Last year: Ferndale did not have any swimmers last year.

Swimmers to watch: Hunter Lewis (jr., butterfly), Jonathan Chang (fr., breaststroke), Paul Valdez (so., IM)

Outlook: Ferndale will be in a co-op agreement with the Bellingham this season. There are three Golden Eagles swimmers, who will train with the Red Raiders and compete on their own in dual meets, before heading to the Class 3A Northwest District Meet for the postseason. "We're one short of a relay," Anderson said in a phone interview. "I keep telling the guys to get one more guy to come out so that we can have a relay. ... Eventually they'd like to have a full team, like they do on the girls' side, but there just hasn't been the interest on the boys' side, yet." Anderson will receive assistant coaching help from Julia Garrison, who coached the Ferndale girls' program during the fall. Anderson said Chang should be really strong in the breaststroke, and Lewis has showed promised in the butterfly, while Valdez is solid all around. "I like working with them," Anderson said. "There is enthusiasm and progress."
