Bellingham cab driver robbed of cash, van by armed passenger

BELINGHAM - A cab driver was robbed of cash and his van when a passenger held a handgun to his head early Tuesday, Nov. 27, in east Bellingham.

The 35-year-old Blue Cab driver picked up the man about 1:20 a.m. from the Econo Lodge, 3750 Meridian St. The passenger, riding in the back seat of the 2006 Dodge Caravan, asked to go to Electric Avenue and Idaho Street, said Bellingham police spokesman Mark Young.

When they turned onto Electric, the passenger whipped out a gun and pointed it at the driver's head, Young said. He demanded money, then told the driver to get out of the van. The driver still had his cell phone, so he called police at 1:30 a.m. as the carjacker drove off.

Nobody was hurt.

Just after 2 a.m. police found the cab abandoned at Roger Jobs Motors, 2200 Iowa St., where it was "parked cattywampus," as if the robber fled in a hurry, Young said.
