The State Department of Natural Resources will host a public meeting Dec. 6 in Vashon to present a draft of the Quartermaster Harbor mooring buoy management plan.

The agency will provide information and seek comments for managing mooring buoys on state-owned aquatic lands in the harbor.

Surrounded by Vashon and Maury islands, Quartermaster Harbor is popular with boaters because of the protection it provides from heavy winds.

As a result, the harbor is becoming congested with unauthorized mooring buoys and abandoned vessels, particularly in Dockton and Burton Cove.

Among the recommendations in the draft plan is the designation of buoy fields in Burton Cove and Dockton; requiring boaters to use embedded anchors with midline floats to reduce the scouring of aquatic vegetation and sediments and designate a navigational channel at Dockton and include a voluntary, no-anchor area.

The meeting runs from 6-8 p.m. at McMurray Middle School, 9329 SW Cemetery Road, Vashon.

The agency expects to post the draft plan and related State Environmental Policy Act documents on its website by Monday.
