Mount Baker falls in 1A state semifinal

Though it got a long drive that lasted the better part of the fourth quarter, Mount Baker couldn't get any closer and ended up losing 28-6 to Montesano in its first trip to the state semifinals.

Jake Schleimer finally puts Mount Baker on the board with 1:03 left in the third quarter with a 2-yard run. Schleimer ran hard on the drive, picking up 68 yards on five carries on the drive, but the Mounteers still trail 28-6.

Montesano made another fourth-down conversion pay off for a score, as Matthew Jensen found Shad Rogers in the back of the end zone for a 2-yard scoring toss after the Bulldogs converted a fourth-and-1 only three plays earlier. Montesano is pulling away with a 28-0 lead over Mount Baker.

Mount Baker finally gets something going offensively, as Jake Schleimer picks up 48 yards on five carries to get the Mountaineers to the Montesano 2 with 12 seconds left in the half, but after a timeout, Andrew Zender is intercepted by Ben Ohashi to keep the halftime score 21-0.

Montesano's third fourth-down conversion leads to Tucker Ibabao's second touchdown run of the game, this one a 1-yard dive, and Mount Baker finds itself in a 21-0 hole with 2:21 left in the half.

Mount Baker's first three offensive possessions net only 18 yards and no first downs, and the Mountaineers find themselves in a 14-0 hole at the end of the first quarter.

Montesano converted another fourth-down play, this one a fourth-and-5 from the Mount Baker 42, as Matthew Jensen hit Shad Rogers for 35 yards to the Mountaineers' 7. Three plays later, Jensen hit Ben Ohashi for a 3-yard TD pass to make it 14-0 Montensaon with 1:40 left in the first quarter.

Montesano efficently moved down the field with its first possession, and on a fourth-and-1 play from the Mount Baker 4, Tucker Ibabao took a sweep around the left end for a touchdown and a 7-0 Bullodogs lead with 5:17 left in the first quarter.

Mount Baker coach Ron Lepper said his team got a little bit later start then they wanted after a team breakfast in Whatcom County, but everybody is eager to take the field against Montesano in the first state semifinal in the program's history. "We're in good shape now," Lepper said. "It's just a matter of learning the ropes. Kickoff is set for 10 a.m. at the Tacoma Dome.
