Sehome's Albert signs to play for WWU

Published: November 22, 2012

Sehome High School senior Rachel Albert, a standout in three sports for the Mariners, has signed a national letter of intent to play women's basketball at Western Washington University, beginning in the fall of 2013.

The 5-foot-9 Albert was a first-team Northwest Conference and Bellingham Herald All-Whatcom County selection as a junior, averaging 11.2 points and 10.0 rebounds on a team that reached the state tournament. She also was a first-team all-league pick as a freshman and sophomore.

"We're excited to be getting a multi-talented athlete from our own community," WWU coach Carmen Dolfo said in a news release. "We feel that her potential in basketball is outstanding, especially as she focuses on growing in that particular sport. And the other thing about Rachel is that she is such a great person."

As a goalkeeper in soccer, Albert was twice a first-team Class 2A all-state pick as a senior and sophomore and received honorable mention as a junior.

Albert posted 14 shutouts as a senior on a 22-1 team that placed second at state. She played on Sehome's state championship squad as a sophomore.

Last spring, Albert hit .565 in softball and had eight home runs as a junior on a team that got to state.
