WIAA sets times, dates for semifinal games

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association set game times for the state football semifinals on Sunday, Nov. 18, and that means the three Whatcom County teams still alive found out when they will be playing next at the Tacoma Dome.

Defending Class 2A champion Lynden will get the weekend started for county teams, when it faces Capital at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23.

The Lions (11-1), who advanced with a 42-7 victory at Sumner on Saturday, Nov. 17, are seeking their fifth trip to the title game in seven years and their 10th appearance overall. The Cougars (11-2), who advanced with a 46-19 victory over Burlington-Edison on Saturday, are seeking their first trip to the championship game since 2002 and their third trip overall.

Tumwater, which was one of two teams to beat Capital during the regular season, and Prosser will play in the other 2A semifinal at 5 p.m. at Lampson Stadium in Kennewick.

Mount Baker will get action at the Tacoma Dome started at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, when it plays Montesano in a Class 1A state semifinal.

The Mountaineers (10-1), who will be playing in their first semifinal, advanced with a 24-9 victory over La Center on Saturday at Battle Ground. The Bulldogs (10-2), who beat No. 1 King's 17-7 on Saturday, are seeking to advance to the championship game for the first time since 1994 and the fourth time overall.

Royal and River View will meet in the other 1A semifinal at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kennewick.

Lummi will wrap up the action for Whatcom County, when it faces Neah Bay at 4 p.m. Saturday in a Class 1B semifinal. It will be the second time the Blackhawks (11-2) and Red Devils (11-0) have played this season, as Neah Bay won the first 48-28 on Sept. 28 at Lummi.

The Blackhawks, who advanced with a 62-26 win over Taholah on Saturday at Aberdeen, are seeking their fourth trip to the title game, all of which have come in the past seven years. The defending champion Red Devils, who beat Mary M. Knight on Saturday to advance, are seeking their fourth opportunity to play for a championship.

Liberty Christian and Cusick will play in the other 1B semifinal at 1 p.m. Saturday at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane.
