STATE PARKS: Meeting will review plan for managing Ft. Worden

Published: November 18, 2012

The State Parks and Recreation Commission will hold a meeting Nov. 29 to discuss the future governance of Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend.

The meeting will be from 7-9 p.m. at the park’s Commons Building, 200 Battery Way, Port Townsend.

The meeting will give the public a chance to comment on a staff recommendation for how the park will be managed. That plan will be presented to the commission Dec. 6.

The commission is studying the potential of a portion of Fort Worden State Park being managed by the Port Townsend Lifelong Learning Center Public Development Authority. While managing the park has been on the table since 2004, in 2008 the Commission directed staff to pursue making the park a lifelong learning center with the assistance of a nonprofit partner.

The proposal to be presented to the commission will be posted online as soon as it’s available at parks.wa.gov/agency/commissionmeetings. Those who wish to comment directly to the commission may attend the Dec. 6 meeting or send a letter to the State Parks Commission, 1111 Israel Road SW, Olympia, WA 98504.
