ABERDEEN - The Lummi football team came out of halftime and made a statement - 40 of them.

The Blackhawks scored 40 points in the third quarter to take control of their Class 1B state first-round game against Taholah and went on to win 62-26 on Saturday, Nov. 17.

The win sends Lummi (9-2) to the 1B state semifinals where it will play Neah Bay next Friday or Saturday.

"I told them we don't need to panic," Lummi coach Jim Sandusky said of the 18-6 halftime deficit. "We made a few adjustments on offense. Basically, we said you guys have to play with a little more intensity."

Dimitri Sampson opened the second half with an 80-yard shovel pass from Jared Tom for a touchdown. Deion Hoskins then scored on a 23-yard pass from Tom and Tom followed with a 10-yard run for a score. Devin Cooper scored on a 23-yard pass from Logan Toby, Hoskins recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and Sampson ended the third quarter with a 72-yard pass from Tom to conclude the 40-point quarter for Lummi.

Sampson had a big game for the Blackhawks, hauling in six catches for 211 yards and adding 96 yards rushing on 13 carries. Cooper had four catches for 73 yards and Hoskins had four catches for 60 yards and 43 yards rushing.

Tom also had a huge game for Lummi with 12 rushes for 136 yards and was 13 for 19 passing for 237 yards.

Lummi has reached the state football semifinals six of the past eight years, Sandusky said. The Blackhawks won their first state title two years ago.
