Outside hitter Kelsey Moore had a team-high 16 kills and three blocks as Western Washington University defeated Montana State University Billings, 25-16, 25-20, 20-25, 25-20, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday, Nov. 17, in Billings Mont.
The Vikings, ranked No. 15 in the latest Top 25 Poll, ended their regular season at 23-3 overall and finished first in the GNAC standings at 16-2. By winning the league title, they earned an automatic berth in the West Regional.
The site and pairings for the regional, which takes place on Nov. 29-30 and Dec. 1, will be announced Sunday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m.
MSUB, who finished 11-15 overall and 8-10 in conference play, was led by Monica Grimsrud with a match-high 19 kills and 13 digs. The Orediggers have never beaten WWU in 15 series meetings.
"We had a good balanced attack, so that helps when you can spread things out," WWU coach Diane Flick said in a news release. "And our defense did a good job of digging out some balls."
Moore, who matched her career-high kill total, had five errors in 49 attempts for a .224 hitting percentage.
Outside hitter Marlayna Geary had another double-double, her league-leading 17th of the season, with 12 kills and 20 digs. She now has 1,328 career kills with the school record being 1,379 set by Meghan Evoy (2001-04).
Middle blocker Kayla Erickson had 10 kills and a match-high seven blocks.
Setter Laurie Yearout had 42 assists and 10 digs, and libero Samantha Hutchinson had a match-best 26 digs.
