Sehome leads league with six first-team selections

Sehome swimmers Molly McGuire and Gwendolyn Roley accounted for three of the Mariners league-best six first-place All-Northwest Conference selections as first, second and third teams were announced late Tuesday, Nov. 13.

McGuire staked her claim as the league's top sprinter with her season-best 26.70 in the 50 freestyle and 57.92 in the 100 freestyle. She earned a 15th-place finish at the Class 2A State Swimming and Diving Championships in the 100 and helped the Mariners to sixth in the 400 freestyle relay, fifth in the 200 freestyle relay and eighth in the 200 medley relay.

McGuire also landed first-team nods as one-fourth of Sehome's 200 free and 400 free relay teams. The Mariners swam a 1:47.36 and a 3:52.94, respectively, in those events.

Roley also earned first-team honors as part of Sehome's 200 and 400 freestyle team. Her first-team individual event selection in the 200 freestyle, where she posted a league-best and state title-winning time of 1:59.07. Roley was a second-team selection in the 500 freestyle with 5:23.85.

Sehome's Shirley Lam was the only other Mariner to receive a first-team selection in an individual event. She swam a league-best 1:03.73 in the 100 backstroke and placed seventh at state in the event. Ellie Poehlman earned first-team nods in the 200 and 400 free relay, and Hannah Holmgren joined Poehlman on Sehome's 200 free team.

Josephine Hegeberg, Tori Franzen and Olivia Nielsen received first-team selections in individual events. Hegeberg posted a season-best time of 1:10.40 in the 100 breaststroke. She placed fifth in the event at state. Franzen won a state diving title with a new 2A meet-record score of 383.55. Nielsen swam a 1:01.88 in the 100 butterfly and finished ninth at the state championships.

Squalicum's quartet of Abby VonFeldt, Hegeberg, Nielsen and Maddie Dohm swam a season-best 1:57.93 in the 200 medley relay and earned a fifth-place finish at state.

Maddie Gillman represented both of Bellingham's first-team selections. She showed her versatility as a swimmer by posting a league-best time of 2:19.78 in the 200 individual medley. Gillman also earned first-team honors in the 500 with her 5:22.99. She took second place in the event at state.
