Roley gives Sehome girls' swim team high expectations after first day of state meet

FEDERAL WAY - The Sehome girls' swim team came away with more than it expected after the first day of the Class 2A State Swimming and Diving Championships, and one reason was because of Gwendolyn Roley.

Roley had the top time in the 200 freestyle and also will be swimming in three other state finals after the preliminary round Friday, Nov. 9, at the King County Aquatic Center.

The final day of the state championships is Saturday, Nov. 10.

Sehome, which won the Class 2A team title last year, came into the meet in a top-eight situation, Mariners coach Don Helling said in a phone interview. After Friday's results, Sehome could be finishing higher.

"We are now in the position to challenge for one of the top four trophies," Helling said.

Roley led the first-day action with a first-place seeding time of 2 minutes, 0.18 seconds in the 200 freestyle, her best time in the event of the season. Roley is followed by Bellingham's Maddie Gillman, who had the second-fastest seeding time at 2:01.22. Squalicum's Josephine Hegeberg also qualified for the final in seventh place. The top eight from each preliminary reach Saturday's finals.

"(Roley) was pretty excited," Helling said. "It was an outstanding swim."

Roley also will be seeded fourth in the 500 freestyle after a swim of 5:24.43 and is part of two Sehome relays that advanced in the top eight.

The Mariners 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay, which Roley both anchors, are seeded sixth after preliminary swims. Sehome's 200 medley relay is seeded eighth.

"We are pretty happy with that," Helling said of the relays. "It all together moved us up from where we were seeded going into the meet."

Other Sehome swimmers to advance to Saturday's finals were Hannah Holmgren in the 100 breaststroke (sixth seed) and Shirley Lam in the 100 backstroke (seventh).

Squalicum advanced two relays into the finals as well as Hegeberg in another event. Besides the 200 freestyle, Hegeberg will compete in the 100 breaststroke final after having the fourth-fastest time in the preliminary at 1:10.40.

The Storm are seeded fifth in the 200 medley relay and seventh in the 200 freestyle relay.

Overall, Helling was excited about the prospects for Saturday.

"The kids are swimming well," Helling said. "I am definitely pleased with the team. They are finishing up their season in good form."
