POULSBO - One goal was all Sehome needed to get going in its Class 2A Girls' Soccer State Tournament first-round game.
A Hanna Tarleton goal 5 seconds before halftime sparked the Mariners to a 3-0 win over North Kitsap on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at North Kitsap Stadium.
The win sends Sehome (18-1-1) to a quarterfinal game against the winner of Klahowya/W.F.West, which will be played Wednesday, Nov. 7.
Tarleton's goal seconds before halftime in front of a running clock on the scoreboard was what the Mariners needed, coach Andria Fountain said in a phone interview.
"That gave us the motivation in the second half to work hard," Fountain said. "She buried it in the back of the net. It was nice to get that one goal before halftime."
Tarleton wasn't done. In the second half she scored the game's second goal that Fountain described as, "She bent it like (David) Beckham." Tarleton kicked a corner kick with her right foot and bent it into the far back corner of the net in the 76th minute to give Sehome a 2-0 lead. It is the second time this season Tarleton has scored directly from a corner kick.
Tarleton was again a part of the scoring for the game's final goal. Her corner kick was knocked around in front of the box before Teya Mischaikov got a hold of the loose ball and kicked it in for a 3-0 Mariners' lead.
"Teya was just there and put it away," Fountain said.
Sehome wasn't pressured much defensively and allowed just six shots on goal as Rachel Albert collected the shutout in goal.
"They didn't get a lot of shots on goal," Fountain said. "Pretty much all the ones they did Rachel was able to make some easy saves on."
Tuesday's win came after Sehome's first loss of the season when the Mariners fell to Squalicum 2-1 in the Northwest District championship game.
Fountain, who is in her seventh year of coaching at Sehome, said it was nice to see the Mariners bounce back the way they did.
"It was nice to come back and play the way we can," Fountain said. "We dominated the game. We had possession for most the time. Maybe (the loss to Squalicum) was what we needed."
Sehome was knocked out of the state quarterfinals in 2011 a year after it won a state championship in 2010.
